Functional caste

A durable social function defined by 3 criteria: function (what civilization buys from it), recruitment profile, and a lineage spanning millennia. NOT the hereditary Indian system.

A durable social function — NOT the hereditary Indian system (no inheritance, no religious purity hierarchy). A functional caste is defined by 3 criteria:

  1. Function — what society actually buys from it
  2. Recruitment profile — who naturally ends up in it (temperament, talent)
  3. Lineage — the same function across millennia, in different civilizations under different names

The 8 castes

  1. Symbol manipulators (scribe → lawyer → coder)
  2. Wielders of force (hoplite → soldier, police officer)
  3. Interpreters: 3a theorists (philosopher → scientist) and 3b mystics (shaman → contemplative)
  4. Movers of value: 4a merchant, 4b financier, 4c visionary allocator
  5. Makers of matter (artisan → engineer, surgeon)
  6. Healers (medicine man → physician, therapist)
  7. Weavers of meaning (bard → writer, content creator)
  8. Coordinators (chieftain → CEO, orchestrator)

A profession is the clothing — the caste is the body: professions appear and vanish with epochs, functions persist. The map of the castes and what the fourth wave does to each of them: chapter 4. The relation to the operator’s 5 skill-stacks: chapters 3-5.
